Background
Cal-State Auto Parts (Cal-State Auto) has been a trusted partner for Ford and General Motors (GM) auto dealers, repair shops, and fleets since 1971. With a unique advantage in expedited delivery services, Cal-State Auto operates across 12 locations in California, Oregon, and Nevada, serving customers with unparalleled efficiency.
Embracing Technology
Cal-State Auto relies on Cloud400’s IBM POWER 9 infrastructure to support its operations, supporting 800 users. Recognizing the importance of staying current, they upgraded from V7.3 to V7.4 to ensure continued IBM software support and access to IBM i OS security patches.
Bob Reese, Systems & Programming GOAT, explained “We could have gone to V7.5, but after doing some research and our system having a low security level 20, V7.5 is a one way valve – we wouldn’t be able to go back, which is why we decided to go to V7.4, then we can upgrade again once our security level has been increased.”
Smooth Transition with Cloud400
In early July 2023, Cloud400’s Penny Pearce notified Bob Reese and Max Madrigal, IT Manager, about the V7.3 end-of-life status and the necessity to upgrade to a supported IBM i OS version. After careful consideration, Bob Reese selected mid September 2023 as the ideal time for the upgrade.
Max shared, “We scheduled the upgrade with enough time to accommodate any delays so that we didn’t reach V7.3 end of life. Thank you to Penny, she kept us on schedule.”
Crystal Clear Communication
Cloud400’s technical team provided Max and Bob clear and proactive communication for a smooth transition. Besides planning and progress meetings, Cloud400 included straight-forward emails with helpful links.
“Our Cloud400 technical team leader had even included the links to the IBM Get Ready Manuals so that I didn’t have to go searching for them. Very good customer service.”
Cloud400 outlined the version upgrade steps, from the initial Save21 backup through detailed upgrade schedule. Bob and Max felt informed every step of the way.
“They explained the whole process of doing a Save21, upgrade, and the schedule. Then, Cloud400 stuck to the plan. They made sure we knew in advance all the steps, and gave us multiple opportunities to raise any questions or concerns.”
“Buttery Smooth” Upgrade Experience
The process was so effortless that Max Madrigal described the IBM i version upgrade as
“buttery smooth. We didn’t have any issues.”
Max Madrigal And Bob Reese Recommend The Cloud400 Version Upgrade
Bob raved, “It’s really 100% good as far as I’m concerned. It was very hands off. All went off without a hitch.”
Max continued, “We appreciate the Cloud400 team’s depth of knowledge and professionalism. They seem to be super knowledgeable and capable and have a high level of expertise.”
