IBM i end-of-life announcements often create a predictable pause inside mid-market IT departments. ISV fees, upgrade costs, support options, and migration timelines can arrive at once.

That combination can make the IBM i end-of-life decision tree difficult to navigate. Once each cost and support option is clear, however, the path forward becomes much easier to evaluate.

IBM i end-of-life changes the support options available for that operating system release, but the platform itself keeps running. The practical decision is whether to upgrade on-premises, use Service Extension temporarily, or move to hosted cloud. Getting ISV transfer fees in writing early gives organizations a clear starting point for comparing those paths.

IBM i End-of-Life and Its Effect on Your Environment

IBM typically describes this milestone as the end of standard support for a specific IBM i release. It changes the support model rather than causing the operating system itself to stop working.

IBM i 7.4 reaches the end of standard support on September 30, 2026. A Service Extension is available afterward for eligible 7.4 environments through September 30, 2029.

Service Extension can provide continued support beyond the standard lifecycle, although coverage and costs differ from regular Software Maintenance. That distinction matters when comparing an upgrade with another short-term support period.

IBM i environments running older software do not simply stop working when standard support ends. The operating system and business applications can continue running as they did before.

Contact each ISV, document the costs, and then compare an on-premises upgrade with hosted IBM i.

In our experience, some software vendors may take one to three weeks to provide transfer fee information. In fact, I have seen some software vendors take months to respond. Starting early gives the team more time to compare both paths carefully.

Extended Support as a Short-Term Bridge

Between standard support and a full upgrade, IBM Service Extension can give organizations more time to complete their plans.

For eligible IBM i releases and products, a Service Extension can include support for new defects and general product usage. Exact coverage depends on the operating system release and installed products.

That additional period can be valuable when an organization needs more time for budgeting, software planning, or a larger infrastructure transition.

Service Extension still works best as part of a defined plan. Its value becomes easier to judge once the organization knows its expected timeline and upgrade costs.

Your team should determine how long additional support is needed and document the related Service Extension costs. The next step is confirming future ISV fees if an on-premises upgrade remains the preferred path. Finally, compare those costs with Cloud400 hosted IBM i over the same period.

IBM i Cloud Migration With Limited Operational Disruption
