This blog briefly explains the key reasons an IBM i (iSeries) users should KEEP IBM SWMA current.
Most IBM i users I work with hunt for ways to improve productivity and cut cost.
I often hear about clients that question the value of IBM Software Maintenance (SWMA) – because it looks like an expense line item that is easy to chop.
1. SWMA entitles you to IBM i Version Upgrades, PTFs and IBM phone software support. You may already know that with IBM SWMA you are entitled to Version Upgrades (i.e. from V5R4 to V7R1), PTFs (Program Temporary Fixes, or software patches), and IBM phone support. Because we host so many clients with a variety of environments, we make frequent use of IBM phone support to fix some pretty unique situations. For Cloud400, it would be impossible to support our clients and business without it.
2. If you discontinue SWMA and then need to reinstate it, IBM will charge you an After License Fee (ALF). Before you terminate SWMA, be aware that if you need to reinstate SWMA you will also have to pay ALF. ALF is about 2-3 times the cost of SWMA. So, if your SWMA is about $1500, ALF is about $3000. If your SWMA is about $3500, ALF is about $7000. Over the years I have seen many, many cases where IBM i users terminated SWMA only to recognized they really need it to fix a problem – and SWMA and ALF are way too big to get financial approval.
3. New IBM i Access for Windows 10 and mobile devices. IBM’s new iAccess (formerly client Access) is now browser based instead of Windows based. IBM will stop supporting iAccess for Windows8 and older. Well, most likely you will see more Windows 10 desktops populate your user network. And, the other BIG trend is mobile devises (smart phones, tablets, etc.) that also want access…and browser-based access is the future direction. You will need IBM i SWMA to get the new browser iAccess and support for all the follow-on variation and drivers.
I understand from my clients that IBM i SWMA seems pricey…particularly when everything is running smooth and stable.
I have highlighted 3 reasons to keep IBM SWMA. And as I talk to clients with future plans, IBM iAccess for Windows 10 and mobile devices may be one of the more important reasons for the next few years.
So, if you are thinking about eliminating IBM i SWMA, think again.
