Why Your IBM i (iSeries/AS400) Is One Of The Best Decisions Your Organization Made
This blog is meant to be shared with IBM i user management and stakeholders to remind them how their operations benefit from this marvelous server.
IBM i is truly a remarkable business platform without peers.
Let’s be clear. Business people focus on revenue, costs and profit.
Obvious?
Yep.
Let me highlight the IBM i key features that business people “get” right away when it is explained:
1) Secure
2) Reliable
3) Lower cost of ownership
IBM i Is Secure
WannaCry Ransomware captured the news this year with the huge volume of attacks throughout the world over a weekend.
Well, have you ever read about the IBM i being captured by Ransomware? No, neither have I.
I have read of NO IBM i brought down by Ransomware, Malware, or any Virus.
Those that read my blogs know that I have written about the IBM i Object-Oriented architecture and its virus-resistance.
So what does this mean to business people?
It means NO ransoms! No disruption.
No disruption means no unexpected downtime …and no unexpected costs. Business people love that.
IBM i has lots of other features that make it secure. For now, Ransomware/Malware resistance is really important.
IBM i Is Reliable
As IBM i users, we know IBM i is exceptionally reliable….to the point we probably take it for granted.
Its reliability is so commonplace my sense is we forget to remind management, stakeholders and users just how reliable it is.
It is really important to remind everyone on the team this server is more dependable than other platforms. Have them compare the up-time and reliability of the IBM i to other servers or Windows desktops.
And what does this mean to business people?
No disruption means no unexpected downtime …and no unexpected costs. Again, business people love that.
IBM i Has A Lower Cost Of Ownership
The anti-IBM i crowd loves to point out how much more expensive the IBM POWER hardware is compared to Intel servers.
Let’s dig deeper than that surface comment.
First, the IBM i is completely assembled, integrated and pretested before you take it out of the box. If you have ever been involved with the effort to setup Intel servers to work together, IBM i is sooo much easier. And less expensive than the team of experts needed to deploy, integrate, test and tweak to get software to work on Intel.
All that extra effort costs time and money. Remember how business people want to spend less time and less money? From this aspect, IBM i beats Intel servers hands-down.
IBM i runs itself. IBM i single level storage knows how to optimize the server performance and where to store data until it is needed. This makes the IBM i easier to manage, which means a very small staff can support a very large operation with IBM i. Business people like that.
As IBM i users, we do not need helpdesk staffing to make sure the applications and screens run correctly…unlike windows.
So, when you look at what is involved with IBM i set up and staffing compared to Windows, IBM i is way less expensive than Windows.
Business people love lower cost.
Call To Action
As IBM i users we need to remind our team – management, stakeholders and users – how well suited IBM i is for business.
When it comes to Secure, Reliable and Lower Cost Of Ownership, IBM i is Unbeatable.
Disclaimer: “IBM i” is the operating system. “iSeries” and “AS400” are IBM servers that precede IBM POWER. I knowingly use these terms combined to reach a larger audience with web site that host my blog.
